Day-long technical tours will highlight Congress themes in action, while blending in the opportunity to enjoy some local food and beverage and cultural/historical attractions. Please see below for preliminary information about Tours (cost included in registration) as well as updates.
Tour registrations are limited to capacity of transportation modes. Please note, that we highly recommend to book your Technical Tour well in advance in order to receive preferred places. Registration for the Technical Tour is available now via online registration form.
Tours not meeting a minimum attendance by 1 May 2012 are subject to cancellation or will be splitted to other Tours.
TECHNICAL TOUR 1
NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE LABORATORY / THE MUSEUM OF GENOCIDE VICTIMS
On the request of government institutions, municipalities, private and public legal and natural persons Laboratory tests air at dwelling places and work places, sewage, bathing-place and drinking water, food and non-food products, cosmetics and personal hygiene products, materials and products, which are in direct contact with food, biocides, detergents, chemical products for household and performs other person and public healthcare laboratory tests. The laboratory carries out required microbiological, parasitological, immunological, immunoenzymatic, serological, hematological, chemical, toxicological, physical, molecular tests and other environmental and general/diagnostic clinical laboratory tests.
After visiting the laboratory tour invites participants to have lunch in Vilnius TV Tower - the biggest building in Vilnius, where you can enjoy food while seeing the whole panorama of Vilnius and after lunch tour will visit The Museum of Genocide Victims which was set up on 14 October 1992. The museum’s objective is to collect, keep and present historic documents about forms of physical and spiritual genocide against the Lithuanian people, and the ways and the extent of the resistance against the Soviet regime.

NATIONAL FOOD AND VETERINARY RISK ASSESSMENT INSTITUTE/ MOLĖTAI ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY

Institute ensures effective implementation of the state policy in the field of food safety and veterinary and safeguards interests of the consumers. Institute provides technical and scientific advice in order to ensure reduction of risks to food and feed safety, animal health and animal welfare and environment. It carries out bacteriological, parasitological, post mortem, histopathological, virological, serological, radiological and molecular and other investigations of animal samples, and physical, chemical, toxicological, microbiological, radiological, organoleptic, olecular and other testing of food, feed, water and other samples.
Institute increases coherence in risk communication though close cooperation with risk assessment institutions and strengthens trust of stakeholders and consumers in the field of risk assessment. It also investigates consumers’ needs and strengthens their perception in the area of risk assessment.
During this tour participants are invited to visit the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory which was built in Molėtai district in 1969. Every year hundreds of excursions are visiting the observatory. The visitors get information about achievements of the world and Lithuanian astronomy, take a look at the telescopes and their equipment. They also have a lecture, illustrated by wonderful photographs of various sky objects: planets, stars, nebulas, star clusters and galaxies, accompanied by space music. On the southern wall of the observatory a sundial is mounted. Near the telescope domes an exhibition of the sacred mythological stones is presented. These stones with dish-like cavities hundreds of years ago were used to collect and keep the sacred water of Perkunas, the pagan thunder god. The interior of the observatory is decorated with the stained-glass windows on the astronomical topics.

THE RADIATION PROTECTION CENTRE/ OPEN AIR MUSEUM OF THE CENTRE OF EUROPE
Protection of general public and the environment against unjustified exposure caused by ionizing radiation and the provision of guarantees for the safety of use of ionizing radiation sources is a concern of each country. In Lithuania for this aim is paid much attention for a long before and this goal is one of responsibilities of Ministry of Health.
Radiation Protection Centre has delegated functions of regulatory authority in radiation protection except the nuclear facilities. It's one of institutions of public health system and is responsible for monitoring of exposure of members of public, exposed workers and separate risk groups under the normal conditions and in case of radiological or nuclear accident, assessment of impact of ionising radiation on humans as well as monitoring of contamination by radionuclides in air, drinking water, foodstuffs and their raw material, building material and their products as well as other objects which may result the exposure on humans.

The exhibition spans an area of 55 hectares and is visited by over 60,000 people annually. The goal of the museum is to give an artistic significance to the geographic centre (as determined by the French National Geographic Institute in 1989) of the European continent and to present the best of Lithuanian and international modern art achievements.

VILNIAUS VANDENYS (VILNIUS WATERS)/ SAILING DOWN THE NERIS RIVER
Vilniaus Vandenys, Ltd. is the biggest water supply company in Lithuania and runs water supply and sewage systems in Vilnius region. The Company supplies drinking water and collects and treats waste water and thus serves about 589.9 th. consumers. Vilniaus Vandenys supplies only groundwater from deep wells, which depth amounts to 40-180 m. The Company supplies 103.9 th. m3 water per day and collects and treats app. 155.5 m3 waste water per day. The length of water pipelines is 1572 km, and this one of waste water pipelines amounts to 1125 km. The water quality control is performed by the Drinking Water Laboratory, and the treated waste water quality control is carried out by the Waste Water Laboratory. The Company serves 18131 entities. On 1 January 2009 the Company employed 958 employees.

LITHUANIAN HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL SERVICE/ VISIT TO KERNAVĖ
Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania is a state budgetary institution responsible for meteorological (including agrometeorological, aeronautical and marine) and hydrological observations and forecasts. It provides hydrometeorological information for institutions, enterprises and organizations, observes rules and regulations of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), participates in international projects and programmes, carries out scientific research, compiles and publishes reference books, annals, and surveys. The observational network covers all Lithuanian territory. The largest network subdivisions are in Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys, and Šilutė.
After having lunch, tour will visit probably the first Lithuanian state capital of 13th century - Kernavė. At that time it was a wooden town of feudal artisans and merchants and one of the major economic centers of the country. Five fortified mounds served to protect the Duke’s castle and the town.
